Animal- and Waterfall-Spotting in Murchison Falls National Park

This is the fourth in a series of nine posts covering our 13-day tour around Uganda with Mountain Gorilla Coffee Tours (“MGCT”).

Although we had suspected that we overdosed on animals in Southern Africa, we were pleased to discover that, by the time we reached our first Ugandan national park, our sense of wonder regarding the animals had returned!  Our first stop was Murchison Falls National Park, where we spent one full day and enjoyed a morning game drive, an evening game drive, and a boat ride. Plenty of time for animal-viewing!  I’m not going to clutter up these animal photos with extra words, so here you go:

It’s hard to see, but these are lions romping across the grass.

Also hard to see, but this is a jackal feasting on something just about as big as he is.

And I’m going to conclude my selection of Murchison Falls National Park animal photos with this buffalo and his bird friends.

Although the animals are the main attraction in Murchison Falls National Park, the landscape itself is rather remarkable.  The park is covered by large sections sections of grassland savannas, borassus palms, and woodland forests.

The following morning, we set out by 6:00 a.m. so that we could make the 7:00 a.m. ferry to the other side of the river.

All aboard the ferry!

From there, we drove up to the top of Murchison Falls, which we had glimpsed on our boat trip the afternoon before.  Murchison Falls is interesting because, at its top, the Nile River is forced through an opening only seven meters wide.  The effect is a spectacularly powerful waterfall in a fairly compact location.  The pictures below only captured so much; to get a true sense of the water’s fury, check out this video that Marc posted to YouTube.

Where We Stayed:
☆ Fort Murchison. Five goats. We stayed in permanent tents that housed some of the more comfortable beds we have slept in on this trip, and the tents had a fantastic view of the water. The three-course dinner served each night was amazing, and breakfast was delicious as well.
